We will never contact you asking for your recovery phrase. Beware of scammers.
What is the recovery phrase and why is it so important?
Recovery phrase (also called mnemonic or seed phrase) is a secret group of words that represent a wallet. When used in sequence, they provide access to the cryptocurrencies stored in that wallet. When creating a new account on Keplr (unless you are using Keplr + Ledger), a recovery phrase will be generated.
Note: If you created a Keplr account using Google Login, only the private key is provided.
This set of words is the only way to recover access to your wallet if you lose access to the device where Keplr is installed or if you forget your password. There is no other way to recover an account except with the recovery phrase, so make sure to write it down and store it safely offline.
Tips to keep your recovery phrase safe:
- Never share your recovery phrase with anyone.
- Never take screenshots of your recovery phrase.
- Before linking Keplr with an external site, make sure the website is official and reputable. Always verify that the transaction details in Keplr match what is shown on the website.
Does Keplr store my private key or recovery phrase?
We do not store your private key or recovery phrase. Your private key is encrypted with your Keplr password and stored locally on your device.
- Ledger: Your private key is stored securely within the Ledger device. Keplr sends the unsigned transaction to Ledger, which signs it after you verify the details. Keplr then receives the signed transaction.
- Google logins: We use Web3Auth, which securely generates a private key using DKG technology. The private key is encrypted and stored locally on your device.
Note: Web3Auth generates a hex-formatted private key for the account, rather than a 12/24-word recovery phrase.
Does each supported blockchain/network have its own unique recovery phrase?
No, Keplr uses a single recovery phrase to generate addresses for all supported networks.
Can I import the same recovery phrase to many different wallets?
Yes, but this would greatly increase the risks associated with recovery phrase exposure so it is recommended that this option be used carefully.
I can't remember my Keplr password, how can I reset it?
Uninstall and then reinstall your Keplr Wallet, and import your existing accounts.
- Standard Procedure: Choose the option [Import an existing account] during the onboarding process to regain access to your accounts via recovery phrase and then choose a new password for your Keplr Wallet.
- Ledger: Choose [Connect Ledger] and set a new password
- Connect with Google: Choose [Connect with Google] and then choose the Google account that you previously used to create your account on Keplr.
How do I view my private key or recovery phrase?
There are legacy Keplr accounts made in 2020 that were created before the private key / recovery phrase feature was introduced. If you have one of those accounts, then unfortunately there's no way to see it.
For everyone else, click on the [Profile icon] in Keplr Wallet -> then the [three dots] next to the account you wish to view -> [View Private Key] or [View Recovery Phrase].
I'm locked out of Keplr Mobile, because I lost access to its password. What do I do?
First, uninstall Keplr Mobile completely from your device, and re-install. Import all your accounts. You will be prompted to create a new password.
Can I import multiple accounts to Keplr?
Yes, this is possible. Refer to “Connect Additional Keplr Accounts” article in our HelpDesk.
